Steps to Recovering from Storm Damage

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

As monsoon season approaches, it’s good to have a reminder of what you should do should your home experience storm damage.

Take inventory

Taking inventory of the storm damage needing repairs is your first step. Remember that most insurance companies cover damages from the storm over the entire property, not just the structure on the property. Not all insurance companies support this, but it’s better to document all damages just in case yours does. Check with your insurance agent to understand your coverage so you’re well-versed ahead of time.

Document the damage

Document any damages from the storm to the outside of the entire house like the walls, windows, doors, gutters, roof, any major structural elements of the house. Look around the entire property including the front and backyards, the side yard, storage areas, garage, and any equipment kept outside. Document and take pictures of any damages you find. Be sure to visually examine any damages to any power or gas lines and anything else that serves power and water to the building but only do so visually; leave in-depth examination to the professionals.

Call your insurance agent

Once you’ve documented what needs to be repaired from the storm damage, call your insurance agent. More than likely your insurance company will take the time to open a claim, but all insurance companies run differently with different processes and policies that need to be adhered to have a successful claim. Again, planning ahead is your best bet so know the answers to these questions well before you need to place an insurance claim:

  1. What are all the terms of the insurance policy regarding storm damage repairs?
  2. What is the deductible on the storm damage repair and the caps?
  3. Does the insurance company have authorized vendors that you must contact, or are you able to contact your own storm damage repair company?
